Animated .gif

Use Flash to create a frame-by-frame animated .gif of 6-10 frames of a character performing an action.  Set the document properties to be no larger than 200 x 200 pixels and use a white background.  When finished, export the movie as an animated .gif file and place it on a web page.  Copy your site into the usual location.  This assignment will be graded holistically on a 5 point scale.

Animated Logo

Invent a name for your own movie studio or production company and use Flash to create a 15-20 second animated logo for it.  It must contain multiple layers, tweened words and images, music, and a "stop" action in the final frame.   The music should be imported from an .mp3 file and faded out at the end.  Use 20 fps and 720 x 480 for the document size.  Export it as an .swf file and copy it to the usual folder.

To Top

Background and Logo

Start by creating a new site called "yourname_bg_logo."  Use Photoshop Elements to create a 50 x 50 pixel background that will tile.  Make sure the background is light enough so it would not distract from most text.  Save it as a .jpg file to the images folder of your site.  Next, use Photoshop Elements to create a 200 x 200 pixel original logo for your own design company. The logo should use either transparent background (gif) or white background (jpg) so you can place it on future sites you create.  Finally, create a new page in your website, use your background image for the background, and insert your logo into body of the page.  Place the website folder in the usual place.

To Top

Banner and Buttons

Begin by creating a site entitled "yourname_bb".  Then create a banner (max 750 pixels wide by 100 pixels high) and a set of at five navigation buttons (max 100 pixels wide by 75 pixels high) with the text "Home", "About Us", "Services", "Clients", and "Philosophy" for a fictional web site.  The color and style should be the same for all.  Use shape tools, layer styles, and a lot of creativity!  Put them on a web page and show the instructor.  This assignment will be graded holistically on a 5 point scale.

To Top

Banner Ad

Use Flash to create a 3-10 second banner advertisement for a product or organization of your choosing.  Begin by creating a new site in Dreamweaver, then open Flash and set the dimensions to 600 x 100.  You must use layers, motion tweening with text, and a stop action in the last (key)frame of your movie, but the rest it up to you!  After completing your movie, export it as an .swf file, then insert it at the top of your Dreamweaver page.   When finished, save the file and submit the folder to the usual place.  This assignment will be graded holistically on a 10 point scale.

You are required to post articles to your blog twice each week.  Make sure that the article is interesting but does not identify you or mention any students by name.

Business Web Site

This project should demonstrate your thorough understanding of concepts learned throughout the course.   You will choose a local business or organization and design a website that promotes and/or describes it.  When writing text, pretend that you are the owner of the business or a member of the organization.  This site should include:

  • At least five web pages.  Possible pages could include Products/Services, Contact Information, and Location

  • Digital photographs taken by you

  • Graphics designed by you

  • A scanned item

  • Tables with rounded borders

  • Rollover buttons

  • Creativity and good design techniques!

  • Motion tweening

  • Shape tweening

  • Fading in and/or out

  • Rotation

  • Layers

  • Sound effects and/or music (set to "stream")

  • Frame action to stop the movie so it won't repeat

Start by creating and submitting a storyboard.  Make sure your movie has a plot, is entertaining, and is appropriate!  Start by setting your movie dimensions to 750 x 400 pixels.  It should be 30 - 60 seconds long at a frame rate of no less than 12 fps.  Export it as a .swf file, put it on a webpage, and copy the site to the usual K drive location.

CD Portfolio

For this project, you will choose at least five of your previous and use them to create a portfolio.  You must include at least one website, one flash animation, and one movie.  Start by creating a folder called "Firstname Lastname Portfolio."  The folder should contain the following files:

  • index.htm your name, photograph, class information (e.g. Multimedia Fall 2007), date the CD was created, and links to your selected projects.  Clicking on the projects should open them in a new window.

  • autorun.inf created using notepad with the following lines

    [autorun]
    shellexecute=index.htm

  • Selected website folders

  • Selected flash and video files

When finished, burn the files inside your portfolio folder to a CD and submit it to Mr. Gilhoi.  Be sure that index.htm and autorun.inf at the root.  If time permits, create a label for the CD that includes your logo.

If you choose to do a DVD portfolio, simply convert your previous projects to .avi and place them in the timeline in Pinnacle Studio.  Then insert a DVD menu, specifying each chapter to return to the main menu.

Gathering Site

Your job for this project is to create a site that users would visit to find out about a gathering such as a wedding, reunion, shower, or graduation.   Use Flash or Photoshop to create rollover buttons and use tables to ensure a quality layout.  The purpose of this site is to inform people and to encourage them to attend your gathering.  It will consist of at least four pages: one for an intro movie and at least three other pages of content.

  1. Create a design on paper for your template.  Draw exactly where your buttons, banners, and other content will be located.  Then draw in where your table cells will be located.  When finished, turn in your design to the instructor.

  3. Create an intro movie in Flash.  The dimensions for this movie should be no more than 760 x 420.  This movie should be 10-20 seconds in length, build excitement for the gathering, and may include appropriate music.  Use the "getURL" action script in the last frame of your Flash movie to load "main.htm" after the splash page plays.  Export the movie as an .swf file and use Dreamweaver to put it on the 'index.htm' page of your site..  Make sure you center the movie on your page.
  4. Proofread and test your site.  When finished, place it in the usual spot to be graded.

  2. Using a word processor, list the name of each site, the URL (web address) of the site, and three reasons you think each site is good (bad).  Be sure to look at it from a design standpoint and not whether it is a subject that interests you.
  3. When you are finished, make a separate "recipe" poster for a good website using a word processor including "ingredients" and "preparation instructions".
  4. Copy the site list to the class folder and hand in a hard copy of the poster so that it can be displayed in the classroom.

PowerPoint Presentation

The internet is great vehicle for relaying information to a large audience.  One of the best ways to present new information is by using PowerPoint to create a slide show of the information and then save it as a web page.  Your assignment is to do just that with the topic of your choosing.  You will not be narrating the presentation, so all of the information should be clear yet concise.  The slide show must contain:

1.    A topic approved by Mr. Gilhoi

2.    At least 20 slides (up to 3 may be titles or closing)

3.    All or nearly all slides should contain a title, graphics, and text.  Long paragraphs should be summarized in bulleted lists.

4.    Sounds on at least 5 slides.  Sounds must be .wav or .midi files and saved in the presentation's folder.  Sounds will not play automatically on web pages, so place them on the page so that you have to click to hear the sound.

5.    Proper references: any information or graphics that you took from another source must be cited on the page that it appears; include hyperlinks when appropriate

6.    Proper grammar, spelling, and capitalization

7.    Make sure you use titles on your pages and preview the presentation as a web page.

8.   When finished, copy your .htm file and folder with slides into a new folder entitled "yournamepower" and copy that into the typical location in the K drive.

  4. Gather graphics related to your projects.  Any images not created by you or must be referenced either next to the image or using alt text.

  5. Organize your report into a site of at least 5 pages.  One page must contain a list of your references and hyperlinks to your online sources.
