Welcome Fall 2008 Students!

Website Tips:

  • Make your links descriptive and easily accessible

  • Where am I?  Make your site and page subjects clear on every page

  • Plan your sites to have a 760 x 420 window

  • Avoid horizontal scrolling

  • Avoid dead space: Use tables (not tabs or spaces) to position text and images

  • Check titles on all pages

  • Save home page as "index.htm"

  • Check your spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar

  • Use consistent (parallel) design (including fonts)

  • Do not move files outside of Dreamweaver - the links won't update!

  • Reduce images to a 72 dpi resolution for the web

  • Use bookmarks/anchors for pages requiring vertical scrolling

Video Tips:

  • Plan to shoot at least 5x as much footage as needed for your movie

  • Be detailed in planning and storyboarding

  • Pick a critical theme or question to answer and make it the focus of your movie

  • Allow the pictures to tell the story

  • Use a wide (establishing) shot to set the scene

  • Use a variety of shots (wide, medium, close-up, extreme close-up)

  • Shoot to edit by allowing a few seconds before and after your scene

  • "Less Is More" when editing.  Delete unneeded footage.

  • Remember to save all Flash and .wmv files to your VP folder on the H drive

  • Use transitions to indicate a change in time or location

  • Separate pans and zooms with static shots

  • Shots that follow one another should be from different camera positions (at least 45 degrees difference in camera position)

  • The less motion there is in a shot, the shorter it should be

  • Use a title duration that allows you to read each title twice

  • Stick with a single font or style for titles

  • Check your timeline for gaps

Flash Tips:

Convert all drawings to symbols
Put backgrounds and individual actions on separate layers
Use the scene panel to organize your movie
