Congratulations to SCC for a wonderful Host on a wet day.
The complete newsletter....will be coming soon.....
The day started early. As always, Perkins is a must so we saddled up at 8:00 and headed to Hudson. It started to rain lightly...then harder. The coin flip was scheduled for noon so we arrived at the field. Don said the Arcadia coach should call the flip. So that is how Don got us to be the home team.....and then it rained..... eventually we agreed on a 4:00 start or at least potential start. The entire team took the bus to Sandra's sister's Jeannie and Dave's house. We watched college wrestling, told stories, and warmed the wet jerseys in the dryer... Thanks Jeannie and Dave.
Arriving back at the field it was verrrrry wet. After the host school worked on the field it was very playable. The field did NOT affect the outcome. They placed some absorbant material on the field and eventually we decided to play ball.
INNING 1: Michelle struck out the lead off batter. A pop up to first and a grounder to Sarah was the inning. Grantsburg picked up a single from Pewe, stole second base and she was left stranded.
Inning 2: 3 quick outs for Arcadia. Heather rips the first pitch to left but is doubled up on a soft liner to short.
Inning 3: Arcadia hits the ball in the air 3 times. Cody makes her greatest catch of her career robbing the #9 batter. She was playing in and the hitter smashed it to deep center. Cody turned and ran and made a Willy Mays catch over her shoulder. If you have never heard of Willy Mays, quit reading. Tiff singles and goes to second on a passed ball. End of inning.
Inning 4: With 2 outs, they get their first hit of the game but is left at first. Grantsburg goes very quickly.
Inning 5: The lead off batter doubles. With 2 outs they rip a line drive to right that goes all the way to the fence. 1-0 Romo doubles down the left field line and Cody scores her with a line drive hit to center. Tiffany gets another hit but nobody else scores.
Inning 6: Arcadia singles. The next hitter bunts but Michelle throws to second for the force. Grantsburg goes in 4 pitches.
Inning 7: The leadoff batter reaches on a wide throw to first and is sacrificed to second. The next batter flies to GAb and Michelle strikes out the next batter. In the bottom of the 7th we have a chance to win. With one out Romo singles. Cody singles. Runners on first and second with 1 out. Sarah hits a bomb over the left fielder's head. The fielder turns and runs....leaps...and back hands the ball for a catch. Our runner at second thought it was over her head and kept running. They threw to second for the double play.
Inning 8: Arcadia gets a single. Kylie throws out two batters. Grantsburg again goes quickly.
Inning 9: Two strikeouts and Arcadia is gone. Grantsburg can't score.
Inning 10: Two quick outs and then Arcadia singles 3 times to score the Number 9 hitter. 2-1 Romo comes to the plate in the bottom of the 10th and singles. Sam runs and steals second. With 2 out, Tiffany delivers a game saving hit to center that scores Sam. Tiff gets to 2nd. Kylie is at the plate with the infield up. She slaps... Line drive....stabbed by the shortstop. 2-2
Inning 11: The Lead off batter singles and reaches second on a passed ball. The next batter lines to Cody.... and then the Play..... Ball hit to center field. Cody gathers her feet and catches the ball in perfect form. She rifles the ball to the plate on one bounce. Romo grabs it an applies a tag. OUT is the call by the home plate ump. WE all rush the field. The Arcadia coach asks the home plate umpire if he would seek the opinion of the 3rd base ump. The home plate ump asks the third base ump....the third base ump says....ball was juggled.....Reverse the call SAFE......3-2 Grantsburg comes up one more time. With 2 outs, Heather singles to the 5 gap. Sam, who is no longer a courtesy runner for Romo, enters the game for Heather and steals second.... But we can't get her in. Game over.
For the game Arcadia had 9 hits and 0 walks. Grantsburg had 11 hits and 0 walks. Both teams played brilliantly.

and finally....a couple of comments on the play. Our job as a team is to execute using proper techniques. Did you see the picture in the Arcadia paper of Romo being tagged out at second. The umps called her safe. She scored the tying run. Being an ump is tough. The umps in this game had a good reputation. Remember that the camera angle was not the same as the angle where the Arcadia coach and umpire were standing. They must have seen the same thing. Was I surprised that that the call was reversed. Absolutely. In my childhood book "lil Abner" it talks about what we control. We cannot control the call..... so you accept it as part of the game. I only worry about the parts that we can control.
