I think this is a pretty cool picture.  If you look closely, you can see last year's team at Goodman diamond in the state tournament.  It was during the game played just before us.  What you see is the players on the practice field looking under the fence and watching the game.  The Ironic thing is that they were under the 212 sign.  Go figure!

Here is one of the memories of playing Luck.  It was a tournament game that had been rescheduled due to a rain out.  The game was to played on Friday night which was also baccalaureate night.... you can already see the problem.  For starters Tracy Stewart got hit in the eye during warm-ups and her eye was swollen shut.  So it comes down to the last inning. By now the seniors had already left!! We have runners on first and third with two out and the tying run on third.  The runner on first was stealing.....According to the umpire Heather did not return to third right away..... Called out.  End of Game.  End of Season.  Did you know that since games are played at a city park that there is an automatic time limit according to the rule book?

In some games we allow players to swing when the count is 3-0.  Don let Heather swing tonight and she hit the fence.  It was close to being a grandslam but she settled for a 2 RBI double.  Heather hit the ball very well tonight and provides us with a big bat right in the middle of the lineup.  Another amazing stat for the night is that Don got 17 players in the game in 4 innings.  Against New Richmond he got 16 players into the game.  That really is amazing!!  Let me bring this up ONE MORE TIME>  In last year's state tournament game, Don pulled our three best hitters just so subs could play in the state tournament.....wow...

Tiffany started the game at second base and was the lead off batter.  In the first inning she was diving back into first when the catcher's throw hit her right on the knee.  She was unable to finish the game.  Annie came out and picked her up like a piece of toast.  As she was picking up Tiff, Annie said that she learned how to pick up dumbells in the weight room.  Don scratches his head in amazement after watching Annie the Ambulance pick her up.

Now for the answers to last week's rules quiz.  Situation:  the base runner steals.  The batter swings and it hits her on the hands and goes fair.  Ruling:  Dead ball.  Strike on batter.  Runners return.  Situation:  Romo picks up bunt and hits runner in the back.  Ruling:  If the runner is in the running lane then the play continues.  If the runner is not in the running lane, she is out.  Dead ball.  All runners return.  Situation:  Annie secures the ball in her arm pit after a bounced throw.  Ruling:  runner safe.  It is not a catch unless you secure it in one of your hands.  Situation:  Somebody gets warned for jewelry.  Ruling:  Next person with jewelry is thrown out of game.  The rules say you do NOT have to go searching for hidden piercings.  Before the game the coach must declare that players are legal.  This means no tongue piercings.  Ask Emily about the head band rule.  What if the ball hits the bat a second time??  If you are still holding the bat it is called a foul ball.

NEW Bat:  We have many players that have spent money to buy their own bat.  The softball budget can afford two bats per year.  Don just purchased a NEW Demarnini (280 bucks) It is very nice.  Some people choose to have their own bat so they can actually practice with it during the week.  Some people choose to use the school bats....the only problem is that when they get to a hitting station they may not get to use the bat they want.  Cody was the first player to use this new bat tonight.  She drilled a double just inside the bag at third.

Baserunning issues:  When you have lots of base runners you have more chances to have issues.  We have lots to talk about after last night.  Also in the game, a Luck player was hit by a groundball.  The runner was declared out and the batter awarded a single.  In the rule book it says....if the ball is passsed the last infielder that has a chance, you can ignore the touching.  I do believe the ball was passed Nicole but perhaps Emily had a chance.  We also got doubled up on first base after a short pop to the left side.  THAT cannot happen again!

Just in case you wanted to know....  When we built our field, we tiled around the base lines to assist in drainage.  If you have also noticed the clay quits just inside the first base line.  We almost moved the field north but we did not want to intrude on the baseball field.  Speaking of baseball, thanks to baseball players that say nice things about our team.  You will be the guys that actually get prom dates!!!

For the game, Grantsburg picked up 16 runs on only 7 hits and 13 walks.  Michelle and HEAT each picked up two hits.  Emily, Nicole, and Cody got the rest.  Michelle and HEAT also had 3 rbi's each.  According to the rule book you must agree on the 15 run rule before the game starts.  The umps did not bring it up so we were surprised when suddenly Luck shook hands and left.  We had plans for a different pitcher in the 7th.  Luck scored 0 runs on 4 hits.  Michelle did not walk a batter in her four innings.  Contrary to the New Richmond umps, these did not make Michelle Mad....which is good...Michelle is a lot better when she is happy!!

TWIS:  so Heather had to make the run.... and it was locked! We all slid around the infield on Monday.  WE realized that some people slide with the improper foot forward.  We realized that some people were NOT prepared to slide (they are called subs)  We even tried some hook slides.  For anybody who selects to slide head first.....Hold your batting gloves in your fists to remind you to not extend fingers.  Many fingers are broken on  head first slides.  Miranda Kammeyer was the last one.  If you are learning to slide... we want your left foot forward!!!  got that???  Left foot first.  Not your right foot because it feels better....Left foot first.  It allows you to fade on slides and also develop hook slides.... If you only want to be mediocre then go ahead and slide right foot first!!  Congrats to Mac and Romo on forensics..  Annie got to see Mollie hit a homerun.  Rice Lake beat Superior twice.  SCC has your pictures on the wall.  Why does Michelle yell Prescott?  Kylie is fast (when she actually knows the signs)  Prom this Saturday... We almost got to leave today at 2:30 because no buses were available.  The JV field is getting prepared for Thursday.  Water will be available for the field Thursday.  We saw the first pitcher to wear a mask.  Good idea.  Sarah forgot her new mask...maybe on purpose.  We spent pre-game dodging poisonous chipmunks in the swamp.  The umps did not notice the STEEL posts in the outfield so we did play the game.  The Luck coach was originally from Hudson..just like Kayla.  The bus was almost empty on the way home so we took pictures.  Congratulations Mollie on being named player of the week in your conference....hope your knee improves.  Sooooo good to see Sena at the game.  The infield had been freshly black topped...wow.  Hey Lydia!  Its nothing a few good hotdogs won't cure!  The 7th and 8th grade started practice Tuesday. Home varsity and JV on Thursday.. Be there!!! and bring somebody.  If you get there by 5:00 you get in for FREE!  And at the concession stand if you buy the first burger, you can buy the second, too.
