The Dreaded Purple eagle-gnat bugs Unity to Pieces...27-1

Unity:  We have people living today that cannot name the towns that make up the school district of Unity. Several years ago, they used to hire bands to play at homecoming.  One year Unity hired a band...paid lots of money...and when the time came for the dance to start... No Band.  They had gone to Unity which is a town in central Wisconsin.  It was a tough dance.  Unity has also become famous because they were the last team to score a run against the Pirates.

So tonight we traveled to Unity.  Last year, Unity tried to be just like Grantsburg and they did our exact warm-up.  It didn't work.  This year they even went farther... They had special sand flies shipped in just for the game.  It didn't work.  But, if you check out the pictures on the bottom you will see that they definitely had an effect on the players and the fans. If your computer has speakers, we taped what it sounded like in the dug out.  Dawn came out with the umbrella and it was an instant success.  Jeff tried the snowman gear, but it didn't match his bare legs.  People tried Off, On, WD-40 and whatever else they could spray... I talked to Craig (Unity coach) and he said it happens every spring for about two weeks... and I guess this was the week.  We told Mollie not to pitch until the batter started to swat at the flies...

The streak is over.  Grantsburg scored an amazing 120 runs in a row before the streak ended in the Unity half of the second.  It was an amazing run and may never be broken...Now it is over..and nobody really cares too much... We were doing some calculating.... If Webster, Frederic, and Luck all beat us, we may not win the conference championship.  Are you worried?

Highlights of tonight's game:  Grantsburg scored five in the first, five in the second, five in the third, seven in the fourth and 5 in the fifth for 27 runs.  Teams don't want to play Grantsburg in JV anymore because all the subs are over on the other field.  Miranda picked up four hits for Grantsburg and had 3 RBI's.  Shelby and Jamie each had two hits.  Shelby had four RBI's tonight to take the honors. Whitney walked four times while Katie and Mollie each walked three times.  It was a lonnnngggggg game.  Marlys even left...  Unity did get four hits for the night but could only muster the lone run.

TWIS:  We actually practiced last night.  We were TERRIBLE.  But by the end of practice, things were coming around.  We develop bad habits when all we do is play games.  People forget the intensity required during practice.  People are influenced by those that are not capable of concentrating.  You must re-find the ability to practice and to practice well.  In order to beat the Cumberlands, Elkmounds, Chippewa Falls, and Poynettes of the state, practice becomes even more important.  You will not see the necessary pitching, fielding, or base running by playing some of our opponents.  It is our job to challenge you in practice... Practice hard...it is not like treading water.  Every drill is set up to practice some game situation.  It is not set up to just waste time until 5:30.. KNOW the difference.  It rained some this weekend.  Miranda danced with the ump at Frederic.  The Frederic coach asked the ump..Have you ever been knocked down?  He said, "not yet, but it almost happened tonight."  Good hit Miranda.  Frederic played their outfield soooo deep that in Grantsburg, they would have been out of play.  Miranda hit one over their heads..Wow.  Katie almost killed the third base person... Sarah hit a shot that was surrounded by the center fielder.  Whitney hit the shortstop with a line drive.  Katie hit a shot at the shortstop...in other words...Frederic made some very nice plays...They impressed us.  I read the press release on Whitney for earning the award Scholar Athlete.  It said she lettered in wrestling?????? Did you miss reading the Frederic newsletter?  So by looking at the pictures below, who was bothered the most by the bugs?  Alyssa hit a foul line drive sooo hard that she killed 52 gnats.  The Unity pitcher had a bull's eye on Whit.  We all smirked when katie ran to the batting circle wearing a catcher's mask..at least she remembered the helmet rule.  During a Unity time out, Shelby fell over while standing by Don.  I saw the bald eagle again as it flew over the lone pine.  I see it every year at Unity.  Why did all the players have their hands up...? Did they know the answers?  And tonight..Whitney, Lindsey and Miranda were taking an Advanced Placement Stats test until 3:50.. go figure!  I waited for them... fired up the green beast...roared down the road....and then Sandra passed me...hmmm... but we made it on time... And can you believe that Buddy has turned in his engineer boots in favor of Velcro strapped tennis shoes?  I would also guess that he put on avon to keep the bugs away.  Cumberland will be a good test Friday..I hope it quits raining. Good job JV on another win.  We have two practices before Cumberland..Let's make them count.  Enjoy the season...before it only becomes a story...

Here are some shots from the University of Notre Dame Campus...It doesn't look like Grantsburg....at all....Kelcy will graduate the same day and the same time as Whitney.  I was just informed that the pictures are tooo big..I will change them in the morning.
