ENJOY THE SWEETNESS....
River Falls....twice!
There will be times in your life when things are quite sweet and you really don't know how good it is because you have nothing with which to compare. Later in life, you have lots of things that add to the experience of living. Let me tell you softball team…..THIS is a special time. Don’t wish for summer. Don't wish for the tournament. You need to just enjoy each practice and each game. You are part of a very special team. Your job for Monday is enjoy practice. Your job for Tuesday is to savor each inning against Northwood. Live in the moment, because it is brief. But, let's reflect on Saturday... time to talk big and spit!
So we all pull into the pool at 7:45. Don pulls in with his brand new Harley dressed in black with chains and a skull cap. He has chosen to wear purple leather for the day. So off he goes….. Now the rest of us started getting hungry and thirsty so we stopped at Somerset. You know how those two minute stops go…two minutes, then 10….then 15…. Duane talked to the cops because Somerset roads were closed and we were going to have to improvise. We stayed on 35 and then took a clever detour. After a few miles, we were back to where we started on 35 and now were trailing the Morrins. We were going to be late but we trudged through Hudson and arrived at the field at about 9:50. It was a nice field and the sun was shining. We took a quick infield, visited the port-potties and off we went….(no pun)
It could be that I was the only one intimidated. I saw the 12,000 population of River Falls and did some quick calculations. It was the same as if Grantsburg were playing Branstad …..before the feed mill closed. But, it didn't seem to bother the players. Nell and Susan started the game with singles. After Elise's sacrifice fly to score Nell, Jamie singled in Susan for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, River Falls went hitless and Elise fanned two batters. Megan started the second with a single and would score on Nell's sacrifice fly to left. River Falls managed to get 1 run in the bottom of the third following a walk and a single. Grantsburg added three more runs in the 4th. Megan again started the inning reaching base on an error. When Susan Walked and Elise reached on an obstruction call, Jamie singled again for a pair of RBI's. River Falls got their last two runs of the game in the 4th using 1 hit, a fielder's choice and a Grantsburg throw to the left field fence. In the 6th inning, Grantsburg just unloaded. Susan had two doubles in the inning. Nell and Katie W also picked up hits. Jamie picked up her third hit of the contest. With the score of 13-3 the game was called after 6 innings by the 10 run rule. Grantsburg had collected 13 runs on 12 hits and 6 walks. River Falls had managed only two hits. Elise struck out 6 in 6.
In game 2 Grantsburg was designated as the home team. Whitney started pitching for Grantsburg. River Falls got 1 in the first following one hit and a Grantsburg error. Susan and Elise scored in the bottom of the first to regain the lead. River Falls drew a walk in the bottom of the second and again, some terrible throws allowed her to score. In the third inning, River Falls came to life. Using only three hits and 3 walks, they were able to score 7 times… Elise came on to pitch the rest of the game. Grantsburg started to plug away and picked up two of their own in the bottom of the third. Whitney and katie W scored for Grantsburg. Elise was hammering the door shut hoping the Grantsburg bats would respond. In the 4th we picked up two more runs as Susan and Elise crossed the plate. And in the 5th, Grantsburg scored big and colored in 4 runs to retake the lead. The final score of the game was Grantsburg 12 runs on 9 hits and 10 walks, and River Falls with 10 runs on 6 hits and 6 walks. It raises Grantsburg's record to 17-1.
Summary for the day… Nell had 4 hits and scored 3 runs. Susan had 4 hits and scored 5 runs. Elise added 3 hits and 4 runs. Jamie had 3 hits. With Susan now hitting well, Whitney hitting well, and katie W hitting and getting on base, it makes Grantsburg's offense really tough.
Grantsburg plays Northwood at home on Tuesday. On Thursday, the tournament starts at home against Webster. The alumni game is Monday night and then the second tournament game is home the next night. BE THERE!
TWIS: Suzy Q, we love you….. and wow did you club a few Saturday. Tyler has a sore head with a really big bump. I saw the old River Falls player that throws the backhand change. What a great day! Nell made a great backhand play to end the second game. Elise has allergies… Do you think she got them from me? Jamie had a little heat thing going on…We may buy her a refrigerated mask. Who taught Whitney and Jamie how to throw. Jamie threw one all the way to Hudson….when it finally came back, Whitney threw it there again….. so much for pick off plays. Katie W is starting to hit. All of her hits are the same place Liz would hit them. Megan is doing double duty, playing outfield and first. Why does Katie K trip all the time? Sarah is the photographer of the day. I knew the coach from River Falls. We also knew the umps from the first Luck game. They actually know the rules…quite refreshing. So I hope you found the web page, Blue.... Are you blind? We had a chance to get the lady ump for the tournament, but we were tooo late. The Morrin dog was almost eaten. Kerissa went to a wedding. WCMP passed on the road trip. Fix us burgers, sell us burgers, no burgers…… starve to death….at least we got a dilly bar at the end. I had a fire on Friday night…beautiful evening… Did everybody watch the lunar eclipse? Did you know the stars spell things. And sometimes they flash red and green….gggg the lunar phase is 20 years.gggg The alumni game should be fun… I hope you can all make it. The senior class trip is Friday. Awards night is tonight. May 1st is still May 1st. The weather Tuesday is supposed to be great. We will try and fire up the sound system.. In a perfect world, there are only things to be happy about....In this world, you have to take advantage of things that make you smile and out balance the downers.... Enjoy the day... Hey Lindy Mary! And for you peons without speakers or a musical memory.... It is Suzy Q.
