Paint the Trophy Purple
Now I normally get excited about MaY day. And yesterday it was a softball game that made it sweet. Usually, it is sweet all by itself. The field was dethatched and mowed. The infield was watered and the rocks picked. The sidewalk was finished and apparently walkable. The sun was shining and the Pirates were HOT! Coming into the game, Grantsburg was undefeated. During the first round, the Pirates had beaten Luck and St. Croix. With the fact that Luck and St. Croix have already split games, this win over Luck places a Solid grip on the conference title. In order for Grantsburg to not have a share of first place, they would have to lose to St. Croix, Unity, and Webster. It Aint goin' to happen!!
Elise was on fire and and asserted herself in the first inning by striking out Tatum and Justine. This gave the Pirates a chance to bat. Nell has had wonderful plate appearances this year and again started the game with a hit. Susan drew a walk and Elise was hit by a pitch loading the bases with nobody out. Just like the script was written, Jamie singled.... bringing in the first two runs. When the right fielder dropped Megan's flyball, Elise also crossed the plate with the third run of the inning. The Pirates had the lead and never looked back.
In the first three innings, Elise pitched to only 9 batters, striking out 7. In the 7 inning game, only two runners would reach base for Luck. One reached on an error by the outfield and the other reached on bloop to right that found the sunshine. Elise struck out 14 batters and never walked 1 person. This brings her strikeout total to 88 for the year. She hasn't allowed a run in the last 23 innings that she has pitched..
Nell continued her torrid batting pace with two more hits. Jamie continued to produce as the clean up batter and had 2 RBI's. The Pirates made the plays tonight and are currently sitting with a 10-0 record. There was good focus tonight. The Hens and the Chicks came through.
Tonight, Grantsburg travels to Spooner for a non-conference game.
TWIS: The crowd is starting to grow at the Pirate field. We are happy that Kerissa is recovering and that she was wearing a seatbelt. When you water the field, does the dirt grow? We had the two best umps in this part of the state. It is refreshing not having to help ump. Once, in a game, the lady ump told me to get my foot off the field. (I had one foot in the dugout and 1 on the field) They are good. They also commented about how they liked the fact that our team ran to and from their positions. Carrie got thrown out twice by the same fielder...Nice throws. Last night was a real game, wasn't it fun? Thanks Byron for keeping score. Where is the microphone and the music this year? The reason that Carrie was out is based on the fact that her bunted ball in her while she was in fair territory. We were reminded that our visors have to match. It is the law!! Some of our freshmen dress in Easter colors anyway....That has to quit. The brownies are still working. Don will drag the field with his new Harley. Thanks to all of the fans that came out. Can you believe that Nell goes 2 for 4 and that drops....her average.... She is batting more than 500. Alumni game date to be posted soon. Where is Jocelyn? Heather, are you coming home? Deb, do you still read this? Hey Lindy!! Kelcy is coming home next Friday. Byron's son went to Carleton. There are 22 7th and 8th grade softball players. What inspires you? By the way, the Hens and the Chicks... We have 5 seniors and 6 frosh....hence the name!! We put Megan in the corner this week and hit her flyballs.... nice to have the seeds back, too. Jamie is doing a great job as catcher...It has been impressive. ANd Matt....I can hardly believe it.... For the rest of you...if you don't have sound on your computer, you are missing out. Matt (Kelcy) didn't find the Mad Cow part very funny...until he heard it with sound.... good job Matt, catch fish!! It is nice to have the batting cage functional. I have noticed some players staying after practice and working on their skills. Tabea still reads this.... and I hope you do, too. Take care!!
Happy MaY Day.... IKYNM,BISWYW..ED
