The rain held off and the Pirates are riding a 13 game win streak into the play-offs.  Today they would add notches for Osceola and Cumberland.  This senior class has amazed Grantsburg fans for 4 years in so many sports.  What they have done is special.  And now they will have one more chance to test their skills... It is called the WIAA tournament.

Grantsburg faced Osceola first and it was a good battle.  Grantsburg scored its first run in the third inning when Grace reached on an error by the Osceola second baseman.  Laura came in as a runner and stole second base.  When the throw went past everybody to the center field fence, Laura would cross the plate with the first run.  Osceola quickly rallied with two runs of their own in the third.  After a lead-off walk, a throwing error placed runners on first and second.  The Osceola #3 hitter then sent one to the fence to score both runs and take the lead.  The Pirates answered the challenge in the 5th inning.  Becky got hot and tripled to left.  After a little nifty running and a little questionable sliding, she stood at third poised to be the tying run.  Grace doubled to the gap to score Becky.  Liz would add a single and Callie would drive her in with her own single.  When the inning had ended, Grantsburg had the lead 5-2 and Osceola couldn't respond.  The Pirates ended the game with 5 runs and 7 hits.  Liz, Susan, and Grace each had one hit while Becky and Callie picked up 2 hits.  Callie also had 2 RBI's.  In winning the game, Callie gave up 2 earned runs on only 3 hits.  She struck out 11 in the 7 innings and walked 3.

Game 2 was against Cumberland who had just defeated Oglivie by a score of 7-1.  Elise got the nod in game two and Grantsburg also won the toss and was the home team.  Grantsburg scored in all 4 of the innings as they gathered 11 runs. Liz scored the first run of the game after reaching first on a catcher error.  That would be the only run that mattered as the game was over in 5 sprinkly innings.  Callie remained hot with the bat as she picked up a scorching double and also 2 walks.  Elise picked up two walks as did Grace.  Susan also had a nice double and Nell added 2 hits of her own with one being a triple to the gap.  Becky, the bronx bomber McLain, doubled again.  While pitching a shutout, Elise faced only 17 batters.  She struck out 6 and only walked one batter.  Cumberland could only manage 1 hit for the game.

TWIS:  I think we were all amazed that the rain held off.  Some players were off to the Mother-Daughter tea.  Some were off to work.  Some were home to bed.  Thanks Mike and Joan for helping set up the tournament.  Let's get the liner fixed.  We finally faced a pitcher that could throw a very effective changeup.  We now have an entire week to practice and to get ready for graduation.  This will be the biggest group of seniors that we have had on the softball team.  They are the first group that have played fastpitch for 8 years and they have done well.  Their talent and hard work have helped to add 3 conference championships to the shelf.  They have had a great season as the main course comes to a close.... Let's enjoy dessert!  I just got a message from our only fan in Germany.  Mitch Olson sends greetings to everyone from his base in Germany.  He has been reading about the team success... So Hello Back, Mitch.  Thanks for staying connected to your home town and thanks for still cheering for all of your friends back in Grantsburg....Take care, Mitch.  Did you know that St. Croix won the Middle Border conference and just beat Osceola 15-3?  Did you know that if we beat Somerset, we will most likely play St. Croix or Cameron.  Did you know Barron was seeded #1 in their divisional region?  So did you recognize the sister of the Osceola pitcher?  Were they wearing pajamas?  Will it ever stop raining?  Let's play Noah's ark.  Hey, McKenzie...how is it going?  Good Luck seniors... Enjoy this last week of your high school career... A friend once told me... When chapters close, just enjoy the chance to jump into the rest of the book....  It was a good friend.  I was reading in the Leader...sorry Byron.  Did you know Luck left 5 runners on base in the 7th inning.  I guess they had 2 on third and 2 on second.  They should have had 2 on first since there are two bases.... Come on Katie, talk to this guy.  You have something invested in this team...It is called your shoes.  Also have them fix the 10-5 record.... Talk to this guy for us....and Elissa is a new name, too... I should have used that in the Eau Claire paper.  Luck is seeded #2 just behind Shell Lake.  and by the way, we have moved up to #9.  Do you know Hurley's nick name?  And now let's go back to that amazing event that happened at Clayton..  The 1000 fans that attended can verify this happening.  A giant bald eagle landed on second base.  It was holding a pine bow in its beak.  Time stood still as we watched.  Soon, it took off and dropped the pine bow into the dugout...  If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it...or was I the only one that saw it... or was the cold just getting to me... or was it a crow with snow on its head?
