The Spring Fling continues......
Grantsburg ate up the baselines last night as they traveled to Siren to play Luck. The game was moved to Siren as they had the only field that was playable. Grantsburg went right from four weeks in the gym to playing a game...without ever practicing on a ball field. And a big game it was...early predictions have Luck being the team that can challenge the Pirates. But, Grantsburg would go home with an 8-1 victory and an early notch in its belt.
The temp was 90 degrees and the field was in perfect shape. We also had the perfect pair of umps. They are state tournament quality and they know all the rules..... And they didn't like Luck fans trying to help them ump.
Grantsburg has been going quietly in the first inning and last night was no exception. Luck would take the lead in the bottom of the first inning as they took advantage of two walks and one error. It would be Grantsburg's only error of the evening. With the exception of one lone hit, it was the entire highlight film for the Cardinals...they would remain chirpless.
The Grantsburg team started the show in the second inning. Elise would open with a solid line drive single to center. Using singles by Nell and Callie, coupled with two Luck errors and a really strange play, Grantsburg would plate 5 runs and never look back. Now for the strange play......an umpire's nightmare. The bases were loaded with two outs. Kelcy was at the plate with a 3-1 count. After the pitch, Kelcy was guessing ball 4, tossed the bat and started towards first. The umpire then called it a strike. Luck thought it was strike 3 and left the field. Fortunately, Grantsburg was aware of the situation. Nell took a detour to the pitcher's mound but then did touch homeplate. The other runners advanced and stayed on the base. Nobody from Grantsburg entered the dugout. It was OK for Nell to wander the infield because nobody was trying to tag her..... What confusion! Soon the discussions would begin. Knowing that the umps would get it right, I went and got a pop. Luck would never recover from that fiasco.
Grantsburg would pick up additional runs in the 4th and 6th innings.
Offensive Highlights: Elise and Nell each picked up 2 hits. Callie, Jamie, and Becky would get the other 3. Liz, Kelcy, Susan, and Becky would each receive a walk. Grantsburg ended with 8 runs on 7 hits.
Defensive Highlights: Callie struck out 10. Elise threw out 3 runners. Jamie stabbed a shot. Becky played heads-up on third and tagged a lost Cardinal. Nobody tried to steal on Liz.
TWIS: There are spiders on the toilet paper roll.... bummer! When the water finally started, it filled the bag of a Luck player. Sara wears red sliding shorts in honor of Luck. White ones are illegal for Grantsburg... of course so is the Liz eye brow ring. Tabea needs sliding shorts. Laura is going to do a back flip when she scores her first run. I was feeling very unsettled so I blew on my hand twice and waited,........ then read about the magic in the library. It was a sense of peace. 91 degrees broke the 1915 record. Our field is now tiled and ready for rain. New dugouts are coming soon. I think the doors look brown. Michelle is back from Mexico....By the way, we didn't really play the alumni game. Lindy is leaving the bank. Bring water. I am going turkey hunting tomorrow. Becky still hires fans to come to the game. Don't play music with swear words. Visors...there is no sun in the gym. Jamie should have gone behind her back on the line drive. Luck has 28 players and only brought some. Thanks Mike Murphy for the use of the Siren field. What is the difference between a scar and a beauty mark? It is all in the eyes of the beholder. Next game is Clayton.
